PLAYS

The Richmond Community Theatre is pleased to announce our upcoming 2013-14 Season!

Old Love by Norm Foster ~

October 17th - 20th & October 24th - 26th

The play spans three decades and half a dozen meetings between Bud, a salesman, and Molly, his boss’s wife. The story is about a friendship which developed over time. A friendship that happens when two people meet and then meet again albeit fleetingly over their lifetimes, their paths cross and there is a thread that has bound them from the first moment they met. One of them is smitten from the very first meeting--the other, let’s just say--less so. He’s recently divorced. She’s newly-widowed. At her husband’s funeral, Bud comes forward to pay his respects, leading to a re-awakening of forgotten emotions. Old Love is a story of romance, courtship and relationships between older adults that will have the audience smiling, chuckling and laughing throughout the entire play. If anyone is a real romantic, this is the play to see.

The Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen ~

January 23rd – 26th & January 30th - February 1st

A classic written in 1879 by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, A Doll’s House’s main character Nora is a vibrant young housewife who suffers from a crippling dependency on her husband Torvald who has always done the thinking for the both of them. In order to save Torvald from a debt, Nora makes a decision which results in an unexpected reaction from Torvald and forces her to forge a new identity from the one she has always known. A Doll’s House is about a seemingly typical housewife who becomes disillusioned and dissatisfied with her condescending husband. This drama of marriage portrays a controlling husband and his wife, a submissive young woman who, when their idealized home life collapses, comes to the realization that she must finally close the door on her husband, children, and life in “a doll’s house” in order to find and live as her true self. Winner of the 1997 Tony Award for best revival. - “The stuff of Broadway legend.” —Associated Press.

Fences by August Wilson ~

May 15th – 18th & May 22nd – 24th

Arguably August Wilson’s most renowned work, Fences explores the life and relationships of the Maxson family. This moving drama was written in 1983 and earned Wilson his first Pulitzer Prize. Troy Maxson is a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who now works as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Excluded as a black man from the major leagues during his prime, Troy’s bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. Though deeply flawed, Troy represents the struggle for justice and fair treatment during the 1950s. Troy also represents human nature’s reluctance to recognize and accept social change. In the playwright’s setting description, symbols connected to his character can be found: the house, the incomplete fence, the porch, and the makeshift baseball tied to a tree branch. Winner! 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama - Winner! Best Revival of a Play - 2010 Tony®® Award - Winner! Outstanding Revival of a Play - 2010 Outer Critics Circle Award - Winner! Outstanding Revival
